Before starting any roof restoration project, it is important to determine that the underlying structure is adequate to support the additional weight of the restoration system and if the existing roof assembly contains a detectable amount of moisture. If there is any question about the structural integrity of the roof deck, a professional engineer should be consulted. If moisture is detected, all wet areas should be removed and replaced with matching materials.

If moisture has penetrated a significant amount of roof area, the Barrett Company should be contacted for specific recommendations.

Gravel Surface Preparation

Remove all dirt, debris and loose gravel from the roof surface using a power broom or vacuum. If brooming is the preferred method, a power blower should be used to remove any remaining dirt from the roofs surface.

Repair or replace all membrane and flashing defects (e.g. blisters, splits, punctures, etc.) that may affect the structural integrity of the membrane system. Inspect and repair, as necessary, all membrane penetrations, (e.g. pitch pockets, vent pipes, equipment curbs, roof drains, etc.).

In order to avoid having to work around new (uncured) membrane repairs, it is recommended that any major repair to the primary membrane be completed with hot applied bitumen in lieu of a cold process method. If the hot application method is not practical, all repairs should be given sufficient time to set before installing the Ram Cold Tar® Plus compound. Foot and equipment traffic should not be permitted over cold process repairs until they have taken a firm set. Set time will vary depending on temperature and weather conditions. Consult your Barrett representative for specific recommendations

All repairs should be made in accordance with generally accepted industry standards, such as those recommended by the National Roofing Contractors Association in their Roof Maintenance and Repair Manual.

Once all repairs have been made and just prior to applying the Ram Cold Tar® Plus, apply a light coat of asphalt primer (asphalt roofs only) at a rate of approximately 1/2 gal. per 100 sq. ft. Allow primer to thoroughly dry before applying the Ram Cold Tar® Plus. Priming is not required over cold process repairs or coal tar roof membranes.

Smooth/Granulated Surface Preparation

Ram Cold Tar® Plus comes ready to apply after hand stirring. No heating or thinning is required. To avoid introducing air bubbles into the material, stir by hand. Do not use mechanical mixing equipment. Mixing time can be reduced by turning cans upside down at least 30 minutes prior to opening.

Before applying the Ram Cold Tar® Plus compound, be certain the roof membrane and its penetrations are structurally sound, watertight and dry.

Gravel Surfaced Roof Membranes

Using a smooth blade squeegee, apply to the prepared surface, a solid and continuous coat of Ram Cold Tar® Plus at the following rate.

Gravel Roof Surfaces

6 gals/100 sq. ft. - 10 gals/100 sq. ft. (avg*)

*Irregular substrates may require more material. The variation in the rate of coverage will depend on the texture of the existing membrane surface. The objective is to apply sufficient material in a fashion that will provide a continuous minimum film thickness.

To achieve proper thickness and assure continuous coverage, it is recommended that the material be spread with the squeegee in 2 directions, 90 degrees to each other.

As the Ram Cold Tar® Plus is being applied and before the material begins to develop a surface skin, apply new roofing aggregate at a rate sufficient to completely cover the Ram Cold Tar® Plus compound.

If gravel surfacing is not desired, consult with your Barrett Company representative for other surfacing options.

Smooth/Granulated Roof Membranes

Using a 1/4” notched blade squeegee, apply to the prepared surface a solid and continuous coat of Ram Cold Tar® Plus at the following rate:

When the existing roof surface exhibits severe surface cracking or is unusually rough, it is recommended that Ram Cold Tar® Plus be installed in 2 thinner coats, together equaling the total recommended amount listed above. The first coat is intended to fill the irregularities and the second coat will provide a smoother surface. If a granulated surface is desired, embed the new granules in the second coat. Allow the first coat to set-up before applying the second coat.

When used to resurface an existing smooth or granulated roof, for optimum performance, Ram Cold Tar® Plus must be top coated using one of the following processes:

Granulated Surfacing

As the Ram Cold Tar® Plus is being applied and before the material begins to develop a surface skin, apply a generous coat of roofing granules at a rate sufficient to completely cover the Ram Cold Tar® Plus compound (approx. 50 to 60 lbs./100 sq. ft.). Avoid all foot traffic on the newly coated surface until the compound has firmly set. Once the compound has set, excess granules can be removed and reused. All excess granules should be removed to avoid clogging the drain system.

Energy Star® Cool Roof Reflective Surfacing

If the Ram Cold Tar® Plus compound is to receive a reflective top coating, it should cure for at least 90 days before the reflective coating system is applied.

Aluminum coating and white acrylic, Energy Star® rated, reflective coatings are available from the Barrett Company. Contact your local Barrett Company representative for a cool roof coating system recommendation.

Immediately rinse or flush equipment and tools with mineral spirits or a citrus based cleaner after use. Exercise all combustible liquid precautions. Use waterless hand cleaner on skin.

Ram Cold Tar® Plus compound can be stored at room temperature where it will have a one year shelf life. This product will settle during storage and will need to be stirred prior to using same.
